Hanoi has a rich Imperial history dating back over a millennium, and a surprising diversity of local ethnic groups weave the fabric of the city’s rich tapestry. Commence your day on the city's outskirts with a private driver and an English-speaking guide as you explore the Museum of Ethnology. Providing a captivating glimpse into Vietnam's extensive history, the museum showcases over 15,000 photos and 10,000 objects, offering a historical narrative of the lives, customs, and traditions of the 54 recognized ethnic groups. Return to central Hanoi and visit the venerable Temple of Literature, established in 1070 and dedicated to Confucius. Continue your journey to Bun Cha Huong Lien, a renowned local spot where President Barack Obama shared a meal with Anthony Bourdain.

Following a delectable lunch, venture to the Ho Chi Minh Complex and Ba Dinh Square, a significant pilgrimage site for many Vietnamese. This traffic-free zone surrounding the complex features botanical gardens, monuments, memorials, and pagodas, including the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum (exterior), Ho Chi Minh’s Stilt House, the Presidential Palace, Ho Chi Minh Museum, and the One Pillar Pagoda. Step back in time to Ho Chi Minh's humble abode, a simple cottage on stilts, reflecting his early revolutionary days. Wander a few blocks to the 11th-century Buddhist One Pillar Pagoda, a graceful structure emerging from the center of a lotus pond on a solitary pillar. Continue to Ngoc Son Temple, a pagoda on a small island in Hoan Kiem Lake, accessible by a beautifully painted wooden bridge. The pagoda offers a popular vantage point for viewing the city.

Conclude your day with a leisurely stroll through the iconic Old Quarter. The bustling streets, adorned with colonial architecture, are alive with scooters, bicycles, cyclos, and cars. Enjoy the charm at your own pace, stopping for Vietnamese coffee or a local snack from enticing street vendors. Your guide and private driver will accompany you back to your hotel, or if you prefer, take your time to savor dinner in the Old Quarter and absorb the atmosphere as you make your own way back at your leisure.

Morning, our guide and driver will be ready to meet you at the hotel lobby, facilitating your transfer to Sapa through the expressway. This Vietnam’s longest expressway has significantly reduced the travel time between Hanoi and Lao Cai, cutting the journey to Sapa to a swift 4-5 hours. This modern route ensures a faster, safer, and more comfortable travel experience compared to traditional train journeys.

Embark on your journey out of Sa Pa town by car, a brief 10-minute drive, leading you to the charming Ta Phin village. Known as a brocade village due to its traditional craft of creating embroidered fabric items, Ta Phin is home to two distinct ethnic minority groups – the Black Hmong and the Red Dao. Despite sharing the same geographical space, each group has preserved its unique customs over generations, resulting in a fascinating cultural amalgamation. While both groups adorn themselves in vibrant attire, the Red Dao women are particularly distinctive with their striking bright red turbans. Stroll through the village, immersing yourself in their way of life, and gain insights into their traditions by engaging with the locals and visiting their homes.

Stay overnight in Ho Chi Minh

Vietnam’s history had witnessed years of French occupation and a lengthy war with America since the late 19th century. One of the most impressive feats of wartime engineering is the famed Cu Chi Tunnels, located in the countryside near Ho Chi Minh City. With your private driver and English-speaking guide, head approximately an hour and a half out of the city to explore this monument to perseverance. Gain important insight into the prolonged struggle against invading enemies, and appreciation for the resilience and spirit of the Vietnamese people. The residents of Cu Chi took the war underground into a highly developed network of tunnels that at its height stretched as far as Cambodia and included meeting rooms, kitchens and triage areas. Imperceptible from the ground, opposing armies could roll their tanks over the bunkers without causing damage to the tunnels below. Living conditions were harsh – in addition to fighting the war, residents battled food and oxygen scarcity, venomous insects, and confined living spaces.

Get back to the city and stop for a local lunch. The afternoon starts with a moving visit to the War Remnants Museum, a must-see for a war or history buff visiting Vietnam. Delve into the images and sounds of Vietnam’s lengthy war history with the French and Americans. The museum features a comprehensive collection of the machinery, weapons, and photos of the Vietnamese side of the war, and includes a moving tribute to the journalists, civilians, and soldiers lost during the war, as well as a critical look at biological warfare, weaponry, and worldwide movements for peace. It’s a truly moving visit but not for the faint-hearted. Continue to the Reunification Palace, also known as the Independence Palace, which was the former residence of the President of South Vietnam until the end of April 1975 during the Fall of Saigon. It was here that the Vietnam War ended when a North Vietnamese Army tank crashed through its gates and led to the formal reunification of the two sides.

The next stop will call the name of Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica, a neo-Roman cathedral built over 130 years ago by the colonial French with materials entirely imported from Marseilles. Call in Sai Gon Post Office, a fine colonial building that was designed and built in the early 20th Century by the famous French architect Gustave Eiffel. A short stop will be made at Ben Thanh Market to buy fruits and souvenirs if you want before transferring back to hotel.
